Old-Fashioned Fruit Candy

When fruit is ripe, plentiful, and sweet, making fruit candy can be as fun as eating it is tasty.

Ingredients
1 cup    dried figs, about 1/4 lb
1 cup    pitted dates
1 cup    raisins
1 cup    dried apricots
1 cup    nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds)
1 tsp.    grated lemon or orange rind
3 tbsp.  lemon juice

Directions
Grind fruits and nuts together through fine blade of food grinder. Then add juice and rind. Line a pan with wax paper. Pack fruit mixture well, and smooth the top. Place a weight on top and let stand for a few hours, then cut into squares. Decorate tops with shredded coconut or walnut halves. Optional additions: add 1 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ, or 1 cup granola-type cereal after grinding. For added sweetness add 2 tablespoons honey. Store in refrigerator or freezer.
